Vitres castle

Castelo de Vitres
Vitres Castle is a medieval fortification that rises atop the mountain of the same name, at an altitude of 472 meters above sea level. It is estimated that its construction was around the 11th or 12th century in response to Norman and Saracen invasions.
The context of the time required the territories to protect themselves from these attacks. Alongside this fortification, other fortifications also stand, such as the Torres de Oeste in Catoira, and the Pontesampaio and A Lanzada fortifications. From its strategic location, it offers impressive views of the Arousa estuary and its surroundings. Although only its ruins remain today, Vitres Castle is a testament to the region's historic and defensive past. This enclave, surrounded by nature, is an ideal place for history and archaeology lovers, as well as for those seeking to enjoy a unique landscape.
